Description of the available technology platform

Wear and corrosion resistance are the characteristics of AlMMC. These characteristics come along with excellent mechanical properties. High E-modulus up to ca 100 GPa and high degrees of hardness up to ca 300 HV are the characterising values achieved by heat treatment, e.g. natural ageing at room temperature and/ or thermal hardening at elevated temperatures. Additionally, there exists a reduced thermal expansion coefficient that enables excellent application with ceramic materials (composite materials AlMMC/ Al2O3)

Highly innovative is thus the application of these AlMMC materials as age-hardenable coating (Patent application DE 10 2008 034 399.4) against wear and corrosion, especially with materials such as magnesium and polymers of every description. Coating processes such as HVOF as well as novel, further developed/ modified processes are provided for the use. For the described coatings AlMMC powder is provided for. (Picture 1)


Another coating option is the powder metallurgical coating of semi-finished products or component parts similar to that of galvanising.

Highly innovative here is the use of open-cell metal grid structure made of AlMMC (Patent application DE 10 2009 011 763.6) ( Picture 2) That way ideal material properties for the ultra lightweight construction are achieved for the provided process can generate unattainably low specific bulk density. Additionally advantageous is the possibility of further hardness enhancement by means of natural ageing at room temperature and/ or thermal hardening at elevated temperatures. Downstream cold forming processes such as rolling or deep drawing lead to further increase of mechanical strength. In this way ultra light and high-resistant constructions are achieved.
